- The sad and caustic lyrics are referring to the break up of a love affair. It is not known if lead singer Annie Lennox is referring to the acrimonious break up with her husband a few years earlier. The words may also be aimed at her former lover and fellow band member Dave Stewart, who wrote the music and produced the track. The We Too Are One album was the duo's last together for 10 years. The relationship between Lennox and Stewart was becoming increasingly strained and they needed to spend time apart. (Read our interview with Dave Stewart.)
